Position Open: Operations Manager

Gampo Abbey is searching for an Operations Manager. This role, which is new to the Abbey, is an opportunity to support a harmonious residential community dedicated to following the basic Buddhist principles of Discipline, Meditation, and Wisdom.

The Operations Manager position is a 3-year commitment that involves working closely and collaboratively with the Head of Monastic Life as the chief administrative officers of Gampo Abbey. The responsibilities of the Operations Manager were formerly held by the Directors of Gampo Abbey.  As we progress to a fully collaborative leadership structure, we are replacing the Director position with an Operations Manager and Head of Monastic Life.

Your main duties will be to:

  • Assure the overall safety and well-being of the residents and guests of Gampo Abbey
  • Oversee the preparation of an annual operations budget and capital improvements
  • Recruit, interview, select and/or appoint lay staff as needed
  • Serve on Gampo Abbey Governance Council (GAGC) and act as back-up Chairperson for GAGC meetings
  • Assist residents in meeting visa and/or work permit requirements
  • Work with Head of Monastic Life to build community, resolve conflict and apply disciplinary measures as needed
  • Oversee the work of the Finance and Facilities departments as well as relate to the budgets of the Kitchen and Housekeeping departments and Gampo Abbey Office
  • Update and/or establish policies and procedures for creating and living in an Enlightened Society including their annual review
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase donor base and gifts to support operations
  • Manage real estate and oversee the development and utilization of the Sopa Choling retreat centre

 

Skills required:

  • Previous experience living and working in a dharma practice community
  • Ability to engage in 4 hours or more of daily meditation practice
  • Collaborative leadership style
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a culturally and linguistically diverse community
  • Budgeting
  • Preference given to members of the Shambhala community
