Supporting Gampo Abbey

Gampo Abbey is supported primarily by individual donations. The cost of maintaining and repairing the Abbey is high. You can assist the Abbey at any time by making a monetary gift in Canadian or U.S. funds as a one-time, yearly, monthly or periodic donation. All donations are sincerely appreciated and are tax deductible.

Projects

We welcome donations for specific projects in 2012, including:

MONASTIC SUPPORT - $22,000

• Support for life monastics ($12,000) - provides funding for medical and dental expenses as well as travel costs to dharma programs for the life monastic community.
• Support for temporary monastics ($10,000) - provides support for temporary monastics who need financial assistance to cover the costs of the monthly resident's fees and general living expenses.

BUILDING/MAINTENANCE FUND - $20,000
Our first priority again this year is our Fire Safety Renovation Fund. 2012 is the fourth year of a four-year program to improve the fire safety of the Abbey. This year we will be installing an electronic fire alarm system throughout the three floors of the main building.

ANNUAL LOBSTER RELEASE - $2,000
Following a long tradition of releasing animals from captivity, our annual lobster release pays the cost to purchase and release the last catch of lobsters from one of the local Pleasant Bay, NS lobster fishermen.

SCHOLARSHIPS - $6,500

• Shedra Monastic College Scholarships ($1,500) - provides support for Abbey residents in financial need to participate in the Abbey's Shedra (advanced Buddhist study program). The Shedra operates on a cost recovery basis, the fees pay for teacher's travel and stipend. Gampo Abbey monastics who teach Shedra courses are not paid.
• Three Year Retreat Scholarships ($5,000) - provides financial support for up to 25% of the costs for a segment of the three year retreat for qualified practitioners who need support in order to complete the retreat.

UNRESTRICTED - $20,000
Fees paid by residents only cover a small portion of the operating costs of the Abbey. We will use these funds where they are most needed.

We hope the Abbey continues to inspire those who have supported us in the past and those who are newly taking an interest in our desire to build a Western Buddhist monastic tradition based upon the Shambhala teachings.
